LAIKS DEJOT 2017

The Laiks dejot 2017 international contemporary dance festival took place from 8–12 June in Riga.

  • The focus was on artists aged 50+, highlighting their contributions to dance and intergenerational dialogue.

  • The program included performances, masterclasses, improvisation sessions, and a lecture-discussion.

Highlights:

  • “Izelpa” by Haugen Produksjoner (Norway): An immersive installation combining science, dance, and sound, with scenography by Belgian artist Lawrence Malstaf.

  • “Pelēkbalts” by Hélène Cathala (France): A sensitive solo reflecting on African influences.

  • “Vice Versa” by Benno Voorham and Abdalla Omari: A poetic take on war's impact.

  • Light installation–performance by Peter Terezakis, Alison Green (USA), and Latvian artists.

  • “Anna Karenina’s Dreams and Tears” by Oleg Soulimenko (Russia/Austria) and Jasmin Hoffer.

  • Cai Rang Ren Qing (China): “Ashes and Snow” created in residence with Latvian dancers.

  • Suzana Fiala (Cyprus): “Referencing – Error”.

  • Latvian artists: Jānis Putniņš, Eva Kronberga, and Agate Bankava.

Venues included Zirgu Pasts, Riga Dome Garden, Dzirnas Studio, and Noass.

The festival, launched in 1998, has grown into Latvia’s leading international dance platform, attracting artists and audiences worldwide.
